CDSA is about vision, and turning that vision into action.  We have helped shape the community and spurred it to make vital strides since our beginning over 25 years ago.

Thousands of people received services provided by CDSA in the past year. Elderly homeowners have had their utility bills reduced by our weatherization program. Homeless persons have moved from our emergency shelter into permanent housing, and the quality of housing in our community has been improved through owner-occupied rehabilitation or through the renovation of affordable rental property. Emergency assistance has helped families to avoid eviction or foreclosure, to keep utilities on or to purchase prescriptions.

English language learners have been able to access bi-lingual services that help them to acclimate to the community. Persons with disabilities had help to find jobs and become self-sufficient. Parents of young children received education that helped them to understand early childhood development and be their child’s first and best teacher.

CDSA is a United Way partner agency

Young children developed a love for reading, and parents had easy access to information that helped them to choose high quality childcare. Child care providers received training that helped them to improve the quality of service they deliver. People seeking to improve their education and employment opportunities received training and support to achieve their goals and improve the quality of the local workforce.

Community volunteers had an opportunity to serve on numerous committees that provided research to discover community needs and find local solutions. Volunteers also helped us to tutor young children, provide free tax assistance, and supported the “Raising a Reader” program. CDSA staff provided support to the “Bridges Out of Poverty” training that 250 people attended to learn about the cultural differences between income levels and how to better serve low-income families.

In cooperation with the Metro Commission and  the United Way, a comprehensive community needs assessment was produced and distributed throughout the community and is being used as a guide for volunteer groups and local service agencies as they plan for the future.
